In this feature, we bring you insights and achievements from the Queensland Young Lawyers (QYL) Committee. Let us find out how QYL burgeoned into a strong reputed brand that it is today.
We asked Helen Driscoll, 2022 President of Queensland Young Lawyers about the journey of QYL. What we discovered was the captivating and astounding insights of the brand.
In this feature, we present to you all of the interesting insights we learnt from Helen about QYL.
Tell Us About QYL
Queensland Young Lawyers is an independent not-for-profit association. We are dedicated to encouraging and supporting the personal and professional development of “young” solicitors and barristers in Queensland.
While in my opinion, “young” most certainly includes the young at heart! Officially, our membership is for those under 36 years of age or less than 5 years post-admission experience.
We are a vibrant and energetic association that endeavours to serve its members by organising regular social, networking, and career development events.

Key Achievements
QYL has come a very long way since its inception in 2009. We have grown from simply the idea to fill a gap in the profession to extending support for those early in their career. Now, we are a large and dedicated committee with a busy and diverse calendar. With a subscriber base of 2000, QYL has built a solid online presence, and a recognised and reputable brand nationally.
COVID-19 presented significant challenges to QYL in 2020, but we came back stronger than ever. Last year, we came up with a lot of events and initiatives, such as:
- Introducing Corporate Memberships
- Implementing four new educational initiatives consisting of various continuing legal education opportunities and professional skills seminars
- North Queensland regional events
- Hosting the National Golden Gavel
- Live streaming events
- Website and ticketing system rebuild
- 2 new industry partners
- 3 new sponsors
- 4 new events (including that fabulous boat party!)
- 100 new members
- A total of 22 events
- 194 first time event attends
- 390 new subscribers to alert
- 1,100 new LinkedIn followers
Way Ahead
It is safe to say, in 2022 we are going from strength to strength. Furthering our efforts in 2021, we are now focusing on the regions to ensure we look after and provide support to all Queensland lawyers, and not just the CBD. We are also working on various internal policies along with new educational and practical initiatives to be released shortly. Our social media presence has nearly doubled again in the first few months of 2022. We are now well over 2,000 followers on LinkedIn and 1,570 on Instagram. Further, we have had over 50 first time members since 1 January 2022 and over 100 first time attendees at our events to date.
We are also taking our annual Salary Survey to the next level. In addition to a comprehensive published report, panel discussion, and analysis, we have created a live interactive dashboard. This live dashboard can help to instantly compare and contrast our Salary Surveys for 2020, 2021, and 2022. The events held in the past three years have had a significant impact on the legal salaries. We have seen some incredible variances, which we want to explore side by side.
