October is Cyber Security Awareness Month, and the Australian Cyber Security Center (ACSC) has introduced a new tool and several resources that help you to assess if you are secure online.
We look into the quick guide that ACSC outlines on establishing cyber security best practices.
Regular Updates
It is imperative to either keep the updates on automatically or process them manually whenever there is a prompt to do so. Important updates ensure your system is secured from any unprecedented cyber mishaps.
Manage Access
Access control is a way to limit access to personnel to all computing systems and networks, including:
- Files and folders
- Applications
- Databases
- Mailboxes
- Online accounts
- Networks
Grant of access should be on an as-needed basis. The thumb rule that should follow is the least privileges for access permission.
MFA
Multi-factor authentication is one of the most effective ways of securing yourself online. It helps prevent anyone from breaking into your account online since they cannot crack the multi-factor authentication.
This is highly recommended to be practised, not just in businesses but also for personal accounts.
Passphrases
Passphrases use four or more random words in your password.
In an instance where MFA is impossible, a passphrase is considered adequate since passphrases are long, unique and challenging to predict. It is best to combine MFA with passphrases wherever possible.
Frequent Backups
One of the best practices is to have a regular backup with at least one backup disconnected from the device.
Train Staff
It is crucial to train your staff on do’s and don’ts to protect your business from any unprecedented event. Thus, regular updates and reminders should be sent to employees to train them against cyber-attacks.
