Practitioners Working Hard To Adapt To FCFCOA Changes
With the newly merged Family Court and Federal Circuit Court of Australia (FCFCOA), practitioners are seeing a lot of benefits. However, there are new challenges that they are experiencing.
The Smokeball 2022 State of Family Law conference in Melbourne saw key judicial registrars, senior family law practitioners and supporters collaborating to help develop the understanding and practical processes of family lawyers across the East Coast.
The most significant benefit of the merged FCFCOA noted was the enhanced role of registrars. Nearly half (43 per cent) of delegates identified this as the foremost positive outcome. While the other benefits noted were reduced delays and backlogs (26 per cent) and clearer case pathways (20 per cent).
Although 62 per cent of delegates are still challenged by the increased level of preparation needed for court forms and court events, 29 per cent of delegates are struggling to understand and apply the new rules.
Census 2021: Five Glaring Changes In The Country
The first lot of data from the 2021 census — conducted on 10 August 2021 — is out. During this time, Australia was under the strictest Covid-19 lockdown.
Indeed, the data revealed some startling insights into how the country is changing. The top five changes deduced from the first lot of census data are as mentioned below:
- Millennials are becoming the nation’s largest generation. As per experts, that’s highly likely to inform policies on issues such as housing and aged care.
- House prices have skyrocketed while home ownership remains stagnant. Surprisingly, the number of caravans jumped by 150%. Australians now own 60,000 caravans and almost 30,000 houseboats.
- The number of people who identified as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander jumped by a quarter from the last census. Indigenous Australians now number 812,728 – about 3.2% of the population.
- More Australians are identifying themselves with no religion. Almost 40 per cent (38.9 per cent) of Australia’s population reported having no religion.
- Australia is becoming increasingly diverse, with more than half of the population born overseas or have a parent who was.
Electricity Market Suspension To Be Lifted – AEMO
The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) had suspended the spot market for the first time since its inception in 1998 along the east coast due to lingering fears of blackouts.
In a statement, the AEMO said it had “seen a clear improvement in market conditions”. Due to this, they stated to resume trading from 04:00 in Sydney on Thursday (19:00 BST Wednesday).
“We have seen nearly 4,000 megawatts of generation return to service since this time last week, and that means the risk of any shortfall has reduced markedly,” said AEMO chief executive Daniel Westerman in a televised media conference.
NASA Launches First Rocket From An Australian Space Centre
Australian commercial spaceport, Arnhem Space Centre, in Northern Territory marks history as NASA launches its first rocket from a space centre outside the US.
This was the agency’s first launch in Australia in more than 25 years. Scientists hope it will help them study the impact of a star’s light on the habitability of nearby planets.
“We want our young people to see and take up the jobs and business opportunities that come from the growth of the Arnhem Space Centre over time,” said Djawa Yunupingu, Gumatj Corporation chair.
Two more rocket launches are scheduled from the space centre by NASA on 4 and 12 July. These rockets will be carrying probes to measure ultraviolet light and the structure of stars.
